How to Outsource Wisely in Startup Tech Companies
Outsourcing can be important for your startup’s success, so make sure you do it wisely.
Eventually, your startup will likely reach a point where it needs more help—but you may not have the budget or inclination to hire another full-time team member. At that point, your best bet is to outsource the work, but this is both a risk and an opportunity. If done right, you could easily accomplish the work that needs done for a minimal fee, but if botched, it could compromise the integrity of your entire operation.
Freelancers vs. Agencies
One of your biggest choices is whether to go with a freelancer or an agency. There’s no “right” answer here, but there are pros and cons to each. Freelancers are generally less expensive and tend to be more flexible, but agencies are much more reliable, and may end up netting you better results. Use your budget, your goals, and the timeline for your project as guides here.
Doing the Research
Before you hire anyone, you should know them inside and out. Spend the time proactively to learn about any agency you’re considering hiring, and talk to any freelancers you’re considering face-to-face. Get a feel for how the communication between you might go, and if you can, get a list of previous clients as references. You need to make sure you’re going to get what you pay for.
Investing the Time
No matter who you choose, spend some time at the beginning of the engagement going over your expectations. Get your new contact acquainted with your brand culture, and make sure they have detailed project specs to work with. Don’t assume that they’ll instinctively know what you want or need; spell it out for them.
Establishing Long-Term Relationships
For the most part, it’s best to treat your new engagements as long-term relationships, rather than as temporary arrangements. That way, you’ll set the stage for an easy segue to your next project, if and when it ever comes up. Even if there isn’t a “next project,” your extra time will make your relationship run smoother.
