How Flow Can Make You More Productive in Startup Tech Companies
Flow can make you more productive as a startup tech company entrepreneur.
If you’re looking for a way to become more productive in your startup on a regular basis, consider taking advantage of the psychological state of flow. Flow is a state of focus and immersion, and you’ve probably experienced it before. While in flow, your mind and attention are completely focused on one task, and you lose track of time because of that focus. It’s a good way to work, but how can you achieve this intentionally?
Difficulty and Interest
The most important factors for achieving flow are difficulty and interest. The task needs to be accessible enough that it isn’t terribly hard, but challenging enough that it keeps your attention—a middle ground in terms of difficulty. It also needs to be able to hold your interest, but not so interesting that you can’t immerse yourself in it.
Only a handful of tasks and projects on your plate at any given time will naturally meet these criteria, so you’ll have to implement some strategies to meet them in other ways.
Achieving Flow
You can maximize flow in several other ways:
- Delegate unnecessary tasks. Start by delegating tasks that are beneath you. If they’re too easy or not at all interesting, you won’t be able to work on them as productively. Make use of your employees and independent contractors to handle these tasks so you can use your time most efficiently.
- Eliminate distractions. If you’re distracted by something more interesting than your current task, you won’t be able to focus on it efficiently. Eliminate your distractions by disconnecting from the internet, turning off notifications, and closing yourself off while focusing on heads-down work.
- Optimize your schedule. Finally, optimize your schedule so you have a clear time slot for the tasks most likely to result in flow. Again, these are moderate-difficulty, moderate-interest tasks during which you’ll be most productive.
