Addictive Qualities: How to Make Sticky Products in Startup Tech Companies






Successful apps and products in the tech world have addictive qualities, keeping users coming back for more.

Whether you’re just starting to brainstorm a potential idea or you’re in the middle of development already, it pays to start thinking about ways to make your product or service “sticky.” Sticky products are ones that are easy to pick up and start using, but are difficult to quit or put down. The goal here for entrepreneurs is to create a product that becomes a necessity, driving your customers to become loyal with the brand and eventually build a bigger audience.

If you already have an idea for an application and a business model for how it’s going to make you money, then you’re ahead of the game, but it’s still important to think about how to make your product more addictive. Consider these strategies as potential ways to keep your customers and users coming back for more:

  • Encourage repeated visits. If you’re directing users to your website, reward them for each new visit. Include some dynamic feature that changes every time it’s accessed or a counter that keeps track of their use. If it’s an application, give them some kind of reward point each time they open it.
  • Promote social sharing. Every time a user shares information about your application or product, reward them. Include automated functions that give your users discounts, redeemable points, or other rewards based on this behavior. It will spread the word fast.
  • Include both free and paid content. You must have some value as a free product or service to easily attract new visitors. If you don’t, it will be very hard to attract an audience. Include a free version of your service, but also include paid content and features as optional additions.
  • Track everything. Any time a user can view a score or metrics about his/her use, it subconsciously drives them to use the application more. Give your users insight into their habits and encourage them to keep coming back.

Addictive technologies tend to be the most successful. Even if it takes you a few rounds of development to perfect the idea the way you envision it, making a sticky product is always worth the effort.
