4 Keys to Know Your Audience in Startup Tech Companies
In order to market your tech company successfully, you’ll need to know your audience and speak to them in relevant ways.
How would you describe your target audience? If you’re in the early stages of company development, you might not know. If you’re still going through the first steps of starting a marketing campaign, you may have a misconception. And even if you do have a firm grasp on your target audience—how well do you know them?
Audiences are hard to pinpoint. It’s easy to pull out some key demographics you want to target, but it’s difficult to truly understand them or verify you’ve chosen the right people to go after. But with a careful approach and plenty of time spent researching, you can get a better idea of who your target audience is and what they want from you as a business.
These four steps can improve your understanding of your target audience and put you in a far better marketing position over time:
- Research your competitors. Regardless of whether you’re targeting the same audience or a different audience, look at the tactics your competitors use to market their products to the masses. What kind of language are they using? What features are they emphasizing?
- Alienate yourself from your idea. Put yourself in the shoes of your target demographic. If you are viewing your product for the first time, what jumps out at you? What will be the most useful? What will be the most annoying? Try to think like the person you’re targeting, and understand how they would see the product—not how you would like them to see it.
- Identify trends. Use market research and social media to research major trends emerging in your target audiences. Not only will this give you a solid platform to use when marketing your new ideas, but it will also help you access the psyche of your target customers.
- Implement surveys. Surveys are one of the most practical and efficient ways of gathering data about your audience. Send regular surveys throughout the process of ideation and development, to see how people respond.
These four simple keys can help you improve your awareness and understanding of your target demographics over time.
